In 2018, Africa Lead continued to support institutional strengthening of the Agricultural Council of Kenya (AgCK) to consolidate membership, policy engagement, and dialogue.
Through the hiring of an institutional sustainability consultant, Africa Lead supported AgCK to develop a business plan and resource mobilization strategy, an institutional sustainability strategy, and provided mentorship support throughout the process focused on resource mobilization. On 12 July 2018, Africa Lead joined the AgCK board of directors and members for a validation meeting of the business plan and strategy at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.
The proposed business plan will guide AgCK to achieve its mandate and realize its overall objectives through improving member engagement, generating funds and bolstering AgCK’s programs and services. During the meeting, members participated in a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis to help them understand AgCK’s role within agricultural policy and strategic action to give them a seat at the table. Towards the end of the meeting, members agreed on a detailed roadmap focusing on strategy, objectives, governance priorities, human resources, fundraising, and establishing a resource center. Immediate actions from the members included: updating membership data, reconstituting the AgCK board, onboarding a full-time CEO, improving entrenchment in ongoing processes and finding more structured fundraising strategy.
Africa Lead will support AgCK in finalizing their business plan, which will be completed in September 2018.
